Series 6:
Lesson 94: |
MIRACLES
A WOMEN HEALED |
|
Passage to Study: Matt. 9:20-22, Mark 5:21-34, Luke 8:40-48.
Read with the class: Mark 5:25-34.
Memory Text:
Younger children – Luke 8:48 “And He said: Daughter, be of good comfort, thy
faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.”
Youth – Matt. 9:22 “But Jesus turned about, and when He saw her, he
said, Daughter, be of good comfort; they faith hath made thee whole. And
the woman was made whole from that hour.”
OBJECTIVES: To teach that:
1. When the person of the Lord Jesus Christ is presented to people, they respond
in different ways.
2. Needs vary in people of different age groups, but the Lord is able to meet
the needs of all who come to Him.
3. Saving faith is Hearing, Believing, and Acting or Responding to what is
presented in the Gospel.
4. The Lord Jesus spoke words of consolation to a distressed woman, then assured
her that the healing He had brought about would be a lasting one.
5. All that Jairus saw and heard would serve to strengthen his faith in Jesus’
power to heal his daughter.
SCENE No. 1. VISUAL AIDS: By the Sea of Galilee, figures of Jesus with several
of His disciples, a boat and Jairus kneeling before Jesus.
DEVELOPMENT:
- Rejected by the Gadarenes, Jesus goes by boat to the western side of the sea.
- The people in this place are eager to hear Him.
Cmt. Conditions similar to these can be found today. There are places in
the world where people do not want to hear the gospel while in other places,
there is an interest.
Sug. Ask the students what things are like in their town or neighbourhood, or in
their family, etc.
- Jairus, an important man among the Jews of that place, came and knelt at the
Lord’s feet. He wanted Him to go and heal his sick daughter.
Lsn. Being important does not mean that a person does not have problems and
trouble in life. Because he was a ruler amongst the people, Jairus was in a
position to influence his fellow synagogue members in their attitude toward the
Saviour.
- Jairus’ daughter was 12 years of age and undoubtedly brought joy to their
home during that time.
Cmt. Use the young age of the girl to speak of how death touches not only older
people but also those who are young.
Sug. Discuss with the students their feelings when an illness that can lead to
death affects children, even some they might know. Emphasize that Jesus is
the One who can give consolation.
- Although the child is near death, Jairus has faith that the Lord can recover
her.
Cmt. If desired, the teacher can recount how the child died and was raised to
life. This miracle is dealt with in Lesson No. 116, Series 8, The Life of
Peter.
SCENE No. 2. VISUAL AIDS: Figures of a doctor, the woman and some remedies on
the table inside a house.
DEVELOPMENT:
- In the same city where Jairus lived, there was a woman who had suffered for 12
years of her life.
Ctr. While Jairus’ daughter was bringing much joy to her family, there had
been suffering, weakness and poverty in the life of this woman.
- During the years of her sickness, she had sought the help of one doctor after
another.
- She had suffered much from them, trying out one remedy after another, with no
improvement.
- By now, she had spent all that she had and, with no possibility of affording
more treatments, she was weak and poor.
Cns. It is when people are desperate that they seek the Lord. As long as a
sinner is looking for some "remedy" of his own to better
himself, he does not seek the Lord Jesus.
- Now, with no remaining resources or hope, she heard about Jesus.
Apl. It is important to speak to others about the Lord Jesus. We
never know when our words will reach the ears of some needy person.
SCENE No. 3. VISUAL AIDS: Figures of Jesus among the multitude and the
woman trying to draw near to Him. Then, change to another figure of the
same woman happy and thanking the Lord Jesus.
DEVELOPMENT:
- The woman, having heard about Jesus, believed that He could heal her.
- It is an indication of her reduced circumstances that the woman did not dare
to ask for help directly, but only dared to touch His garment.
Cmt. This lesson is a good example of the truth of Romans 10:17, “Faith cometh
by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” The woman heard, had faith,
and then received words of assurance from Jesus.
- The people crowded around Jesus, hindering her from drawing near.
- With much difficulty, she made her way through the multitude and from behind
Him, extended her hand to touch the edge of his garment. (See Matthew
9:20.)
Cmt. The woman’s action demonstrates a faith that was pure, with complete
confidence in the power of the Lord Jesus. All this was because she had
“heard of Jesus”.
- Immediately she realized she had been healed.
Apl. Those who have been healed from the disease of sin recognize the difference
it has made in them.
Cmt. In the case of the woman, she received immediate relief from her malady and
was benefited for the rest of her life. Likewise, when a person trusts in the
Lord Jesus, salvation is received immediately and the effects are experienced
for the remainder of life on earth and into eternity.
- She attempted to leave without being seen, but Jesus asked, "Who touched
my clothes?"
Apl. The Lord knew who it was but He wanted the deed to be confessed before
others as a testimony to what He had done. The same is expected of those
of us who are believers today.
- Had she gone away without speaking with Him, she would have missed a great
blessing. She would not have heard the Lord’s words assuring her that
she was forever free of her sickness.
Apl. The Lord wants to give us blessings much greater than any we can
imagine. For this reason He says to us, “Grow in grace and the knowledge
of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2nd Peter 3:18).
- In a corner of the board place a figure of the woman kneeling before Him,
telling Him “all the truth”.
- He called her “daughter". This is the only time that we read of
in the Bible that He spoke thus to a woman.
- Not only was she the object of the Lord’s kindness but He also gave her
assurance by the words of comfort spoken to her directly. “Daughter, thy
faith hath made thee whole, go in peace, and be whole of they plague” (Mark
5:34).
- “Be whole”, meant that what had been done in her would be lasting and
permanent.
Apl. The salvation received by faith in the Lord Jesus is a permanent,
eternal possession.
- She did not need to continue to be in "fearing and trembling".
She could now live in peace.
Cmt. During the conversation with the woman, Jairus was waiting. Would
seeing the Lord honour the faith of the woman have taught him something?
When Jairus received the news of the death of his daughter, the Lord said: “Be
not afraid, only believe.”
- Without doubt, Jairus’ faith was strengthened by this event. |
