MOSES
CROSSING THE READ SEA

Passages to Study:    Exodus 13:17-22; 14:1-31.
Read with the class: Exodus 14:19-31.

Memorization Texts: Younger children – Heb.11:29  “By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land”
Older children – Heb. 2:14-15. (Christ Jesus came) “that through death he might destroy him … “ etc.

OBJECTIVES:  To show
1.That God wants to free His creatures from the power of Satan.
2.The importance of faith to believe and act upon what God has said.
3.That there is an enemy of souls that never rests in his attempts to ensnare them.
4.That the work of Christ on the cross means life for those who believe and condemnation for those who do not believe. 2 Cor. 2:15, 16.

SCENE No. 1.  Desert countryside, where guided by the cloud, the Israelites abandon Egypt.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON:
- It was God’s power that had freed the Israelites from the slavery Pharaoh had imposed upon them.  Apl. Every sinner is a slave of Satan.
Sug. Talk with the students about what a slave does and how he lives. The teacher may know about some young people trapped by drugs, emotions, vices, etc.,  which will serve as an example of what slavery is. -
Through the blood of a substitute which has been shed, a road is opened to freedom for Israel.
Apl. Freedom from the power of Satan is possible, thanks to the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- The Israelites had to respond in faith and leave Egypt, taking advantage of the freedom that had been obtained.
Apl. It is necessary to put our faith in the work of Christ in order to enjoy the freedom He obtained for us.
- If any Israelite had stayed behind, it would have been because he wanted to do so, thus losing the opportunity to gain his freedom.
Sug. Stress that the Israelites needed to obey the word of God through Moses in order not to miss the way.  True obedience is complete obedience.
- The cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night assured the people of the constant presence of the Lord.
Apl. The Lord guides His own today through His Word, through the Holy Spirit in us and through the counsel of spiritual persons.
Apl. The Israelites left all behind never to return.  They took only what was necessary to begin a new life in dependence on God for the future.
Lsn. It is important to teach that salvation brings liberty which means an end to the former life.  Behind are left practises, possessiones, projects and plans which will be replaced by a new kind of life where the interests of God prevail.

SCENE No. 2.  Pharaoh’s palace where his advisors inform him that the Israelites are leaving Egypt.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCENE:
- Pharaoh had begged the Israelites to leave but now he orders his chariots out to follow them.
- Despite the defeat Pharaoh has suffered, and the painful consequences his people suffered, Pharaoh thinks he can make the Israelites return.
Apl. Although Satan’s sentence of condemnation has been passed, he does not stop his attacks on people.
- Blinded by their unbelief, the Egyptians follow the Israelites.  They will end up buried in the Red Sea, for God is not mocked.

SCENE No. 3.  At the Red Sea.
Fig. An overlay may be added to show a road opened through the midst of the Sea.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCENE:
Having journeyed from Goshen through desert-like land, the multitude of Israelites find themselves facing the Red Sea.
- When the Israelites find themselves in an impossible situation, pursued by the Egyptians and unable to turn to one side or the other, God opens a way of escape for them.
- Moses, with his rod upraised, shows the way they must take.
- The way leads through the midst of the Red Sea.
- The Red Sea is a type of death, burial and resurrection.  The Israelites die to Egypt, and are buried in the waters of the Red Sea, which has been raised up like a wall alongside them.
- They come out of the Red Sea “resurrected” to begin a new life on the other side.
- Any figure or type of salvation in Christ will have these three steps, death, burial and resurrection.
- Without them, salvation is impossible.
- Every Israelite had to experience these three steps to get out of Egypt, If he did not, there was no freedom for him.
Apl. It is necessary to “experience” by faith what Christ did for the sinner.
- Christian baptism is a symbol of this today.

SCENE No. 4.  The Israelites rejoice in the desert on the eastern side of the Red Sea, which has closed over their pursuers.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCENE:
- The Egyptians have been buried in the Red Sea.
- Thankful Israelites offer praise to God.
- To the Israelites, the Red Sea represented life and liberty.
- That same sea brought death and condemnation to the Egyptians.
Apl. The work of Christ on the cross means life for those who believe and condemnation for the unbeliever. 2Cor.2:15-16.
- Now enjoying their liberty received on the basis of a sacrifice, the Israelites show their gratitude to God.  They sing a song of praise.
Apl. Those who are saved and thus freed from the power of Satan show their gratitude today by praising and worshiping God each day.
- They are now free to serve God and are no longer subject to Pharaoh, a type of Satan.
- Those who are saved do not use an altar of stone, but offer their gratitude and praise on the Altar that is Christ.  Heb. 13:10, 15.
