Series 1:
Lesson 17:
GENESIS
JACOB GOES DOWN TO EGYPT

Study: Genesis 45:1-28, 46:1-6, 29-34.
Read with the class:  Genesis 45:9-11, 24-28, 46:29, 30.

Memorization Text:  Children - Genesis 45:9. “God hath made me Lord of all Egypt”.
Older - 2 Corinthians 1:10.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To point out Joseph’s love and mercy.
2. To show that God’s call today is similar to Joseph’s message to  Jacob: “Come .. to me”.
3. To teach that a person who has been pardoned will live a changed life, no longer telling lies, etc.
4. To use Joseph as an example of  our Lord Jesus.
5. To illustrate that receiving pardon not only provides for the needs of this life but also has  the assurance of living with Him forever.

SCENE No. At home in Canaan.
DEVELOPMENT: - The brothers reach home after their second trip to Egypt.
Having drawn near to Joseph, the repentant brothers have been pardoned and now bring good news to the rest of the family.
- They have a personal invitation from Joseph, carried by those who have seen and experienced his pardoning grace.
Cns. The Sunday School teacher is like one of Joseph’s brothers, a bearer of the good news of the gospel, because of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour.
- The message the brothers bring is based on the fact that he who had been “dead”, is alive and glorified.
Cmt. It is important to portray Joseph as Saviour and Provider, concerned about the wellbeing of those he loves. It will then be easy to speak of the Lord Jesus and apply the lesson.
- Their message is short and clear:  “Come down unto me, tarry not”.
- Jacob at first “believed them not”, but was finally convinced by the words of Joseph and the evidence of the wagons sent to transport them.  (Gen. 45:27)
- The gifts were evidence of Joseph’s wealth.
Apl. Ask the students for ways in which we experience daily the “wealth” (provision) of God. Food, air, water, etc. are some of the obvious tokens of God’s goodness.
- The brothers speak the truth now, since reconciliation has occurred.
Apl. Repentance and pardon make a difference in the  believer.
Sug. Ask the students to name evidence of the new life.  For example, truth instead of  lies, obedience instead of disobedience, generosity instead of selfishness, interest in God’s honor instead of personal glory.
- Jacob and his sons have been living in a place where there is no food.
- Once they are with Joseph, they will have plenty of everything.
Apl. Every provision has been made for the sinner who draws near to God.
- With Him, there is a supply for every need.
Cns. Jacob had to see to believe.
Cmt. The Lord Jesus showed His nail pierced hands to convince His disciples.  These wounds continue even today to be evidence of His love towards us.

SCENE No. 2.  On the way to Egypt.
DEVELOPMENT of the lesson:
- Jacob consults the Lord before leaving the promised land to go to the pagan country in which his son lives.
- God tells him to go for He will go down with him into Egypt and would also surely bring him up again. He did return, but as a body for burial in his own land.
Apl. One should not accept any and all invitations to do something.  We must first seek the will of God, for we can count on Him to  accompany us only when we are acting within His will. He does not want anyone to “go down into Egypt” for worldly reasons.
Cmt. God’s Will is “that every one which seeth the Son and believeth on Him,”   have everlasting life”. Juan. 6:40.
- Jacob who never thought to see Joseph again now longs to see him and travels with joyful heart.
Apl. A Christian lives in this world with joy in his heart because he is travelling to his heavenly home.
-The Lord Jesus wants to gather everybody to His heavenly home.
- Our Lord, like Joseph, not only pardons but also provides everything necessary for the journey with the destination ensured.

SCENE No. 3. Joseph’s meeting with Jacob in Goshen.
DEVELOPMENT of the lesson:
- Jacob and his sons are filled with joy on seeing Joseph, now become an important person.
- The place of privilege given to Jacob and his sons is due to their relationship with Joseph
Cmt. Knowing Christ by faith brings great joy to the believer, and privilege to be called a son of God. See John 1:12 “But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:” {power: or, the right, or, privilege}
Apl. Believers will have even greater joy when we they actually in His presence.
- Pharaoh meets them also, and no doubt once he learns more of Joseph’s story, he discovers virtues in Joseph that he had not known about before.
- Joseph loved his father and longed to see him blessed  in every possible way.
Cns. Jacob is named in Hebrews 11 among those who lived by faith.  They were sure about what their end would be and could die in peace, trusting in the promises of God with regard to the future, and passing those promises on to those who continued after them.
- Jacob, who during all the early part of his life did things for his own advantage, has a better end than beginning.  He who wrestled with the angel and came away from that encounter limping and needing a staff, at the end of his days is a worshipper, leaning upon the top of his staff”. (Heb.  12:21)
- Joseph’s dreams were fulfilled completely.
- Even though it may seem improbable that a prophecy be fulfilled when heard for a first time, if a promise is from the Word of God, it will be fulfilled.
Apl. Even those promises that take many years to be fulfilled, will all come to pass some day.
- Jacob’s family was greatly blessed through Joseph while in a distant land.
Apl. The church has been blessed while here in the world even though far away from its heavenly home.

SCENE No. 4.  Application.
DEVELOPMENT of the lesson: -
- This application has to do with the invitation, COME.
- Joseph, now glorified sends the message to come.
- No one is excluded from this invitation. Parents and children alike were to respond.
- Going to Joseph will mean leaving the place where they presently are, never to come back again.
Apl. Conversion to Christ, and drawing near to Him takes the sinner away from his former world.
- The new life in Egypt would be more carefree and fulfilling, compared with the one they had in Canaan.
- The secret of their happiness and the reason for the abundant provision for their needs is found in Joseph, Saviour and Lord in Egypt.
- Point out Joseph’s love and mercy.
